You may connect your domain name to your web hosting account in either of the two ways:

Via A Record
Via nameservers
Let’s assume your domain name is example.com and it’s registered with a domain registrar http://www.namecheap.com

Just like a website, a domain is also hosted on a server. The host of a website is called web hosting server/ web server and the host of a domain is called Domain Name Server (DNS).

If you want to use the domain name servers of your domain registrar, then leave them as it is inside DNS records of your domain. In this case, you can point your domain name to your web host via A record. And here is the procedure to add A record Add an A record | Domains – GoDaddy Help US

You may also have to point MX records to your mail server for emails to start working on the domain. If your mail server is GoDaddy then Add an MX record and if it’s Google or some other then add their MX records.

In the method explained above, you can change your web hosting any time quickly simply by changing A record of the domain. Further, if your mail server is different than your web host then you can change web host even without stopping working of your emails. This way you can avoid creating sub-domain.

The second method is by changing nameservers to GoDaddy Find my GoDaddy nameservers and this method is considered an easy method. After changing nameservers at your domain host, you add the domain in GoDaddy as Addon domain and all the related DNS records will be automatically generated making the job easy for you. This way, you can’t avoid sub-domain but you may delete it after it is created and it won’t bring any harm.
