How do I use VPS?

The VPS Hosting provider would have provided you with the IP and Credentials to log in to the server. On your Windows Computer, type “MSTSC” at run prompt (or open Remote Desktop Connection from All Programs). In the RDP Window, enter the IP provided by the VPS hosting provider. You should now be able to access your VPS Hosted server.

If you have opted for Linux based VPS, you have to download Putty (SSH Client) on your desktop/laptop, enter the IP in the hostname field and log in. After logging in, try changing the password to something you can remember. Make sure that, SSH circle is checked. If you are able to connect, try to install WinSCP in future as it will make it easy for you to copy files from Windows to Linux.

Ensure that you have updated the OS with all latest patches, install Anti-Virus and Firewall.

A website is a collection of files, images, flash files etc. The server that you are using is a web server with a Public IP Address. You design the webpage and you should see it when you just enter the IP in the browser on any computer connected to the Internet (I’m hoping you know how to use Apache or IIS to configure your site).

Now, you want to give it a name as IPs are not easy to remember. This is where DNS comes into the picture. As you have registered the domain through GoDaddy, you have to log in to your GoDaddy account and modify the A record. An A record is the one which connects your Domain to your IP address (where the IP address is then provided to you by your VSP).
