I want to be a web designer. Should I start off using WordPress or from scratch?

You don’t have to learn web design or development to build a good looking website. While it’s a plus if you want to customize further WordPress themes and functions, it is not mandatory for normal use.

Instead of diving into coding that you won’t really need, try to focus on the following areas:

Getting familiar with WordPress as a CMS, how to create pages, posts, how to set up an eCommerce feature, create and manage posts
Pick one theme and get familiar with it too. There is a lot of great picks beginners friendly. Just avoid free theme at all costs. Website Templates & Themes from ThemeForest is a good place to get started. Most of WordPress costs $50 – $60 theme and come with extensive documentation.
Ultimately, spend some time to learn advanced features on your theme and eventually use plugins to extend your friend’s website
Building websites is not a techy task anymore. If you are willing to learn basic things, you can produce stunning results.
