Would you create a web design business on the basis of WordPress?

I’ve been building sites in WordPress for several years now and have found it to be a great choice for many reasons. WordPress continuously upgrades and adds features and there is a lot of good documentation available. As a developer, I find it easy to customize to suit the needs of a particular client, and I learn something new with each project. Additionally, I’ve found that clients find it easier to use than Drupal, Joomla and many other CMS’s.

That said, we should aim to match the CMS to the site. One should look over the scope of the site needs first to determine what functionality is required, and if WordPress can fulfill those requirements. There may be cases in which something else, such as Drupal, is better suited. In my experience, I’ve found that WordPress can do most of the projects I consider.

I tend to create my own themes for clients, though I know others who adapt existing themes. I often use custom post types, taxonomies and custom fields to add the functionality I need. If you are considering writing your own CMS then your coding ability is strong enough to make WordPress bend to your will as necessary. You may even find yourself writing your own plug-ins. I think you’ll find that WP will serve you well.
